To understand what it really means to divide by a fraction,
لتحقيقِ فهمٍ حقيقيّ لمعنى القسمة على كسر،
let us first consider what it means to divide by a whole number.
لنتأمّل معنى القسمة على عدد صحيح.
Suppose we have six balls and three boxes.
لنفترض امتلاكَنا ستَّ كراتٍ وثلاثة صناديق.
Suppose we place an equal number of balls into each of the three boxes.
لنفترض أننا سنضع أعداداً متساوية من الكرات في كلّ من الصناديق الثلاثة.
Now we count how many balls we have in one box.
سنعدُّ الآن كم نملك من الكرات في الصندوق الواحد.
This number is what we refer to as the result of six divided by three.
يشكّل هذا الرقم ما ندعوه بناتج قسمة ستة على ثلاثة.
Now suppose we have six balls and only half of a box.
الآن، لنفترض امتلاكنا ست كرات ونصف صندوق فقط.
Suppose that we place an equal number of balls into each of the half boxes.
لنفترض أننا سنضع أعداداً متساوية من الكرات في كلّ من أنصاف الصناديق.
As before, we now count how many balls we have in one box.
كما في المرّة الماضية، سنعدّ الآن عدد الكرات التي نملكها في الصندوق الواحد.
As before, the number of balls in this one box
كما في المرّة الماضية، يمثّل عدد الكرات في الصندوق الواحد
is what we refer to as the result of the division.
ما ندعوه بناتج القسمة.
In order to have one box, we need two half boxes put together.
للحصول على صندوق واحد، نحتاج إلى نصفي صناديق موضوعين مع بعضهما.
This is why dividing by one half is the same as multiplying by two.
وهذا ما يفسّر كون القسمة على نصف مساوية للضرب باثنين.
And, this is what it means to divide by a fraction.
وهذا هو معنى القسمة على كسر.
