There are three books in the Bible known as the wisdom literature
In de bijbel staan drie boeken bekend als wijsheidsliteratuur.
Proverbs, Ecclesiastes and Job
Spreuken, Prediker en Job
The first proverbs showed us that God is wise and just
De eerste, Spreuken, liet ons zien dat God wijs en rechtvaardig is.
Yeah we learned that God has ordered the world so that it's fair
We leerden dat God de wereld zo heeft georganiseerd, dat alles eerlijk gaat:
the righteous are rewarded the wicked are punished
de rechtvaardigen worden beloond en de slechte mensen worden gestraft,
in other words you get what you deserve.
in andere woorden: je krijgt wat je verdient.
But then we meet Ecclesiastes who observes people don't always get what they deserve
Maar dan ontmoeten we Prediker, die waarneemt dat mensen niet altijd krijgen wat ze verdienen...
Yeah he said the world isn't always fair.
hij zei zelfs dat de wereld niet altijd eerlijk is...
The life is unpredictable and hard to comprehend just like smoke.

And this makes you wonder okay well is God wise and just?

Exactly and so it's that question that is being

explored in the final book of wisdom Job.

Alright let's dive in.
Oké, laten we gaan kijken!
So Job begins with the strange story that takes place up in the heavens which are described

So God is there with these angelic creatures called the sons of God and

Then one of these angelic creatures approaches He's referred to in Hebrew as

The Satan, who is this?
De Satan, wie is dat?
Well, this word is actually a title which literally means the one who is opposed.
Nou, dit woord is eigenlijk een titel, die letterlijk 'tegenstander' betekent (hij die tegen werkt).
So out of this whole crew he is the one questioning how God is running the world.
Uit de hele ploeg is hij degene die in twijfel trekt hoe God de wereld regeert!
And he proposes that Job might not actually love God
En hij suggereert dat Job misschien niet oprecht van God houdt,
that he's only a good person because God rewards him.
maar dat hij alleen maar zo'n goed mens is, omdat God hem beloont...
If God were to take away all of the good things he gave to Job then
Als God nou eens alle mooie spullen die Hij Job heeft gegeven van hem af zou pakken...
we would see his true colors.
dan zouden we zijn ware ik leren kennen!
So he thinks Job is just working the system?
Dus hij denkt dat Job alleen maar gebruik maakt van Gods systeem?
That's exactly right. Maybe he's obeying just to get what he wants.
Precies! Misschien gehoorzaamt hij alleen maar omwille van het voordeel.
So God agrees to this experiment and allows the Satan to
God gaat akkoord met deze test en staat de Satan toe
inflict suffering on Job.

And Job losses everyone and everything that he cares about. It is devastating.

And remember he deserves none of this God himself said so

The remarkable thing is that in the midst of all this suffering,
Des te opmerkelijk is dat Job te midden van al dit lijden
Job still praises God.
God blijft prijzen.
At least for chapters one and two.
Tenminste... in hoofdstuk 1 en 2.
But then in chapter 3 we find out how he's really feeling inside.
Maar in hoofdstuk 3 ontdekken we hoe hij zich écht van binnen voelt.
He unleashes this poem that reveals this devastation.
Hij schreeuwt de wanhoop uit die deze verwoesting losmaakt.
It's a long elaborate curse on the day that he was born

After this some of Job's friends come to visit him

to offer their help and all of them are like

so you must be getting what you deserve.

And for the next thirty four chapters the friends and Job go back and forth
En in de volgende vierendertig hoofdstukken bakkeleien de vrienden en Job
in very dense Hebrew poetry.
in prachtige Hebreeuwse poëzie.
His friends keep speculating about why God might have sent such suffering
Zijn vrienden blijven speculeren waarom God dit lijden op zijn pad heeft gebracht,
and even start making up lists of hypothetical sins that Job must have committed.

But after each accusation Job defends his innocence.

And Job is innocent.
En Job IS onschuldig!
He is! He's also on an emotional roller coaster
Echt! Maar hij zit ook in een emotionele achtbaan:
At some moments he's very confident that God is still wise and just.
het ene moment is hij er zeker van dat God nog steeds wijs en eerlijk is,
Yet in other moments he's doubting God's goodness.
maar het andere moment twijfelt hij toch aan Gods goedheid.
He even comes to accuse God of being reckless unfair and corrupt.
Hij komt zelfs zover dat hij God ervan beschuldigt super oneerlijk en corrupt te zijn.
So by the end of the dialogue Job demands that God come and explain himself in person.
En aan het eind van de gesprekken eist Job dat God komt en Zelf uitlegt waarom...
And God does so he comes in the form of a great storm cloud
En God DOET het. Hij komt als een grote, donkere storm.
Now God doesn't give Job a direct answer.
Maar God geeft Job geen direct antwoord.
He doesn't tell Job about the conversation with the Satan
Hij vertelt niks over het gesprek met de Satan.
Yeah he does something very different . He takes Job on a virtual tour of the universe.
Maar Hij doet iets heel anders... Hij neemt Job mee op een virtuele reis door de schepping.
He shows Job how grand the world is.
Hij laat Job zien hoe groots de wereld is.
And he asked him if he's even capable of running it or
En Hij vraagt hem of hij zelfs maar in staat is de wereld één dag te besturen
understanding it just for a day .
of te doorgronden.
He shows how much detail there is in the world.
Hij toont hem hoeveel kleine details er zijn op aarde.
Things that we might see every day but really don't understand at all.
Dingen die we misschien elke dag zien, maar eigenlijk niet begrijpen.
But God does he knows it all intimately.
Maar God wel, door en door!
He pays attention to the beauty and operations of the universe in ways that we haven't even imagined
Hij besteed aandacht aan de schoonheid van en de processen in het heelal op een wijze, die we ons nog nooit hebben voorgesteld
and in places that we will never see.
en op plekken, die we nooit zullen zien.
Then to conclude God shows Job two wonderous beasts and

Yeah they are dangerous.
Ze zijn echt reuze gevaarlijk.
I mean they would kill you without even thinking about it

And God says they're not evil.
En toch zegt God dat ze niet slecht zijn.
They're actually a part of his good world.
Ze vormen zelfs een onderdeel van Zijn wereld, die goed is.
And then that's it that's God's whole defense.
En dat was het dan, Gods hele verdediging!
It's kind of weird. I mean what was this all about?
Beetje vreemd... wat bedoelt Hij daar nu mee?
It seems to be this. From Job's point of view it looks like God is not just.
Het lijkt erop dat Hij dit wilde zeggen: Vanuit Jobs beleving lijkt God wel onrechtvaardig.
But God's perspective is infinitely bigger.
Maar Gods perspectief is oneindig veel groter.
He is dynamically interacting with a whole universe of complexity when he makes decisions.
Hij neemt beslissingen, gebaseerd op Zijn doorlopende intensieve betrokkenheid bij een eindeloos aantal complexe gebeurtenissen.
And this is what God calls his wisdom.
En dát noemt God Zijn wijsheid.
So Job asking God to defend himself is actually kind of absurd.
Dus het is eigenlijk van de zotte dat Job God vraagt om Zich te verantwoorden.
He couldn't comprehend this kind of complexity even if he wanted to.
Hij zou de mate van complexiteit niet kunnen bevatten, al zou hij het willen...
So where does this leave us?
Dus wat is dan onze conclusie?
Well, leaves Job in a place of humility. He never learned why he suffered.

And yet he's able to live in peace and in the fear of the Lord

But that's not where the book ends because after this God restores to Job double everything he had lost.

And this again is surprising. I mean, is this a reward, is God saying
En dat is opnieuw verrassend. Is dit dan toch een soort beloning? Zegt God:
"Congratulations Job you passed this elaborate test."
"Gefeliciteerd Job, je bent geslaagd voor deze pittige test!"?
No I mean the whole book just made the
Nee, juist niet! Het hele boek heeft juist duidelijk gemaakt,
point that Job losing everything was not a punishment and so now getting it back isn't a reward.
dat Job niet alles verloren heeft, omdat hij werd gestraft. En dus is het ook geen beloning dat hij nu alles weer terug krijgt.
So why does he get it back?
Maar waarom KRIJGT hij het dan terug?
Apparently God in His wisdom decided to give Job a gift
Blijkbaar heeft God in Zijn wijsheid besloten dit Job cadeau te doen.
we don't know why but what we do know is that
We weten niet waarom, maar wat we wél leren,
Job is now the kind of person who no matter what comes
is dat Job nu iemand is geworden die ongeacht de omstandigheden,
good or bad he can trust God's wisdom
goed, of slecht, kan vertrouwen op Gods wijsheid.
And that's the book of Job and the end of our wisdom series.
