a full scale of it, I've always been impressed

- So, she knows romance, right? She got it.
Who is this song for, though, is the question.
- ♪ Can you imagine a world... ♪ - It's such a peaceful song, too.
It's not, like-- this part! - ♪ Imagine a world... ♪
Ah, so good! - It's SO generic
of there's a person I like, we should cuddle.
But also, I'm melting. - I feel like it's just remembrance.
But at the time-- it's one of those things
where you really, really love someone,
but you have got to let them go or they gonna take you out.
When she's making reference to those good times,
that's for real. That's real talk.
- It's so personal to her. So, you immediately, off the bat,
on the first song, you go, "Okay, so that's the kind
of album this is gonna be." And "This is gonna be great."
- (FBE) So, this second track is called "needy,"
in which Ariana sings that it's okay to feel needed,
to want attention, and to care, and display emotions for others.
- Does this have anything to do with Pete Davidson
and his tweet?
- ♪ And I’ma scream and shout for what I love ♪
- That's pretty good. I like that.
- ♪ ...don't give no [bleep] ♪ - Ooh. Give no [bleep].
- ♪ I'm a little messed up ♪ ♪ But I can hide it
when I'm all dressed up ♪ - Just can't help it .
Ooh, I feel that in the chest. - She speaks the truth a lot.
I think she's a great lyricist, honestly.

♪ And I can be needy ♪ - It's okay, girl. Me too. Me too.
- I love that she says that, because I feel like people are like,
"Being needy is something bad." - ♪ Tell me how good it feels
to be needed ♪ - I think the interesting thing
about her new music is you can physically track
how it compares to things that are actually happening
in her life, so it really is just kind of a journal of sorts.
- I think it's sending the wrong message to girls,
'cause, you know, I don't think it's cute to be needy.
- My daughter listens to her all the time.
There's a lot of permission to be yourself in her music
and not living up to other people's standards or expectations.
- ♪ Usually... ♪ - It's so good. Ah.
- ♪ But gravity seems to be the only thing that's pulling me ♪
- This is such a pretty song. - ♪ ...rise and shine

It's cute, but it's just like, how many space references
can they put in this? - Yup.

That longing, being away from something for a minute

♪ I'ma, I'ma need space ♪ - I feel like if you're
in a teen movie, and you're stargazing
on the roof of your car with your girlfriend,
this is the song that's playing.
- This album is confusing, because the last song was "needy,"
and now she's like, "No! I need SPACE!"
What's next? (laughs) Oh, I bet the next song
is called "therapy." - ♪ Love me, thank you, leave me ♪
- Ooh, a little funkier. Look at her bring that in.
Good for her. - This one sounds really different
from the other songs I've heard already,
so I like that. - ♪ Don't want you
in my bloodline ♪ - This feels more like
a spring break song. - ♪ ...wanna have a good time ♪
- Ah! "Just wanna have a good time." Called it.
- ♪ ...wanna have a good time, yeah ♪ - (laughs)

and I think that's funny as [bleep].

She has had a hard year. All the spotlight,
losing someone she loves, someone she cares about.

because it's so personal. - ♪ Hear what they're sayin'
on the TV ♪ ♪ It's crazy ♪
- She's so good! - The lyrics themselves
that make this album so unique, because it's all based off
of her past experiences that we've all kind of
watched her experience in the spotlight.
- The space isn't good enough for her.
Sleeping around isn't good enough for her.
And now she's like, "Guys, don't trust my smile.
I'm actually not happy." What?!
I'm so confused right now. - ♪ Got a bad idea ♪
♪ How 'bout we take... ♪ - (chuckles)
- ♪ ...a little bit of time away? ♪
- Oh, yeah. This one I've heard. (chuckles)
- This is something that you definitely do after a breakup, though,
or just any sort of bad experience. It's "Let me just forget
this ever happened" or at least try to.
- ♪ Yeah, I'ma call you over here
to numb the pain ♪ - I hate to admit it,
but it sounds like all of her other songs.
- ♪ Bad idea ♪ - I like it. That felt more anthemic.
- I have a feeling I'ma like every single song on this album.
- ♪ Love me when we make up ♪ - Little bit of reggae in there.
You feel it? You see? - ♪ Promise me that when you
kiss my lips, you'll make it stick ♪
♪ That's the way to shut me up after an argument ♪
- Interesting. - Uh-huh.
So, it's a little covering up. You know, you make up,
but it's still under the surface, you know?
- ♪ Yeah-eh-eh ♪ - Ooh.
- ♪ ...ruin my makeup ♪ - It sounds really similar
to just other things that I've heard from her.
- It's very slow, though. I love you, Ari,
but I don't think I'm a fan of this one.
- The makeup on your face and making up in terms
of a relationship. They went well together
in terms of the track. - She has such great beats
no matter what. No wonder this album's everywhere,
everything at all times. - (FBE) Fans speculate
that this next song, "ghosting," is dedicated and about Ariana's exes,
the late Mac Miller and most recent ex Pete Davidson.
And fans think that this song serves as an apology of sort
to Pete for having to see Ariana in a negative state when she was
mourning the loss of her ex love.
- Ugh, I hear this is the one that makes people sad and crying.
And I haven't listened to it yet, because I've been afraid.
- ♪ I wish he were here instead ♪
♪ The one that living in your head ♪
♪ He just comes to visit... ♪ - But "ghostin" for Mac Miller,
that kind of hurts me a little bit. I'm kinda sad now.
- ♪ Baby, you do it so well ♪ ♪ You've been so understanding ♪
- When you break up with somebody, it's 'cause you're not happy.
But that doesn't mean it was all bad.
- ♪ Admit that it hurts you, baby ♪
- These songs get me the most, any time someone sings
about a dead relative or a dead lover, anything like that.
- I like the symphony bedtime vibes.
- It's very heartfelt, right? You can hear it in her voice.
- ♪ 'Stead of ghosting him ♪ - I'm so sad.
I miss Mac Miller. I'm gonna cry.
I'm legitimately tearing up a little bit.
- Ooh! She better tell it.
Can't remember the last time I felt this way about an album.
- I hate that I'm so invested in Ariana Grande's relationships,
because none of this has anything to do with me!
And yet, here I am feeling upset over this song. (chuckles)
- ♪ My imagination's too creative ♪ - Yes, it is, bb.
- ♪ ...I see angel ♪ - I love this.
- ♪ Angel, angel ♪
♪ Without a halo... ♪ - I think this is probably
kind of what she did with Pete then, where it was a relationship
that she jumped into really fast and kind of just had this image
of, "I'ma marry him." - That's what that first blush
of romantic love is. It's also idealized.
And then you hold that idealized version.
- ♪ But it was all in my head ♪ - See, at that point,
that's always your own fault. You're creating an image in your head.
- ♪ It was all in my head ♪
- That voice. She can sing the phone book
and it would sound great. - All those songs we just heard,
there's not one on there that I'm like, "I don't understand
what she's talking about." They're all so heartfelt.
This feels like it came out of all the stuff
that we all got to see her go through.

- This is a dumb song. I like it, but it's a dumb song.
- Makes you feel powerful. I hate it, because I wanna
listen to new stuff, but I just fall back to this song.
- I prefer her singing, 'cause she has an amazing singing voice.
If she's gonna release music, I would like to hear her singing
and not "rapping."

- I just want her to sing me lullabies!

See? I haven't heard the song! - Beautiful.
Such a good song. This is a song that I'm like...
everybody should listen to. - I can't remember those other songs.
The one about her needing space, the one about being needy,
those are emotions that you might feel from time to time,
but "thank u, next" is this sort of long-term emotion
that she's gonna feel for a huge part of her life.
- (FBE) Lastly is "break up with your girlfriend, i'm bored,"
where Grande tries to get a boy she's attracted to
to break up with his girlfriend so she can have him herself.
- Yes! I am ready! - ♪ You know what you're doing to me ♪
♪ You're singing my songs... ♪ - I think this is definitely
one of my favorites off of the whole album.
- ♪ When I know you out here... ♪ - (sucks in breath) Mm.
- ♪ Then you realize she's... ♪ - Yo, every song in this album,
it's something that we all experience, but people don't talk about a lot.
- (sings along) ♪ Break up with your girlfriend ♪

For some reason, this cracks me up a little bit.
- I mean, it has a really bad message,
but at the same time, she's Ariana Grande. Whatever.
- She went through so much before "thank u, next."
And then this entire album is kind of like an emotional renaissance for her.
- I'm really impressed. Love the album.
[Bleep], man. What an artist, you know?
