Namaste! I recently interviewed the Union Minister, Piyush Goyal and we talked about three different topics.

First, I raised the concern about China becoming too powerful and a threat to India. But, Piyush Goyal said, he is not worried.

He is not concerned. And he cited India’s moral superiority. Modi’s charm and standing in the world.

to understand what’s happening in India. What’s India’s place in the world. The first segment I would like to talk about

the global place of India and its development. When people overseas think of India, they invariably want to compare with China.

विश्वमध्ये भारताची जागा आणि त्याचा विकास बद्दल| जेव्हा विदेशी भारताला बघतात ते त्याला चीनशी तोलतात|

Its just sort of natural. Is India the next China? GDP is very good. But the two have a different history and a different domestic system.

भारत भविष्याचा चीन आहे का? आर्थिक विकास चांगला आहे| पण दोघांचा इतिहास आणि गृह प्रणाली वेघळी आहे|

Now China, having accumulated a huge cash reserve of foreign exchange, has said,

चीननी खूब विदेशी भांडार भरवले आहे|

It’s investing a trillion dollars in this road and belt initiative, which is, I see it is a colonization of Africa.

चीन सहस्त्रकोट्याधिक डॉलर आपल्या सडक संबंधी पुढाकारात गुंतवतो आहे जे माझ्यामध्ये आफ्रिकेवर कब्जा आहे|

Because that’s where there is lot of raw material and lot of fast moving economies. So,

they are where the European colonizers were a few hundred years ago.

In terms of owning a stuff and taking over many of the leaders and investing there. That’s a big part of the investment, but there is another investment also, which is in our neighbourhood.

In Pakistan and Myanmar and, you know, Maldives now taking over Nepal or trying to take over Nepal and Shri Lanka.

So, they use this money to create what might be the next level, the next generation of trade routes.

The ports, the infrastructure, the sea trade routes. And is that something worrisome for in India, even though we have a dynamic economy now.

Is that something that they can use to somehow compromise us. -I think the world is becoming a smaller place

with global engagement at its highest in so many centuries. India is a part of that global economy and

वैश्विक सामंजस्य वाढत आहे आणि भारत त्या वैश्विक अर्थव्यवस्थेचा भाग आहे|

Has benefited significantly in terms of trade, in terms of technology, in terms of an aspirational billion.

भारतानी व्यापार आणि प्रोद्योगिक माध्यमानी प्रगती दाखवली आहे|

Looking for a better quality of life for its people. And I believe, what this government has focused on in the last few years,

जीवनाची गुणवत्ता वाढवत आहे| काही वर्षापासून सरकारनी जे काम केले _

is giving an identity to every Indian and a unique identity to India, which is not necessary a clone of what other countries are doing. -Right.

त्यांनी लोकांना पहचान मिळाली आणि भारताचा नाव वाढला| हे आवश्यक नाही कि ते संसाराचे कामाची नक्कल असो|

But we are trying to create and work on the ethos that we have inherited, the Bhartiyata, the Indian ethos.

Which believes in ‘Vasudhaiva kutumbakam’, which says that the world is one family. We have never looked at colonizing any of our neighbours or being a big brother to any neighbour.

वसुधैव कुटूम्बकं ह्या दिशेत आहे| सर्व विश्व एक परिवार आहे| आम्ही कधीच कोणावर कब्जा नाही केला|

If you recall prime Minister Modi’s first trip to Nepal, there he said, I have not come as an elder brother. We are both equals. -Right

पंतप्रधान जेव्हा नेपाळ मध्ये गेले तेव्हा ते हे म्हणाले कि मी तुमचा मोठा भाऊ नाहे, आम्ही बरोबरीचे आहे|

And what a message it sent to Nepal and the Nepalese people. It is a matter of very great satisfaction for us.

नेपाळच्या लोकांना जो संदेश गेला तो संतुष्टिकारक आहे|

That today when you go to any part of the world, Prime Minister Modi is received as probably one of the tallest leaders in India. -Yes. -Not only,

आज संसारात पंतप्रधानांची उंची वाढलेली आहे - हो पण हे फक्त

because of his own charisma, not only because of his own personal relation with world leaders. But because, he represents a billion Indians

त्यांचा व्यक्तित्वामुळे नाहे तर ह्या मुळे कि तो शंभरकोट्याधिक भारतीयांचा प्रतिनिधी आहे|

It is the respect of the billion plus Indians that is being transmitted through Prime Minister Modi.

त्यांचाच मान पंतप्रधानांनी पुढे पाठविले आहे|

He has emerged as a leader who has showcased India’s strengths, -Yes. -To the rest of the world. And

त्यांनी भारताची शक्ति बाकी संसाराला दाखविली आहे|

He himself has shown qualities of providing kind of statesman like leadership to the world.

त्यांनी उच्चस्तरावरील राजकारणी चाल संसाराला दाखविली|

The Paris accord, for example on climate change, the whole world recognizes that it was thanks to Prime Minister Modi’s

very very game changing thoughts. And a large vision for the future. That parry could have become a success. -Yes.

To my mind, China has its own ideology, its own way of working, which India is certainly never going to adopt.

चीन चे आपले विचार आणि आपला काम करणाचा तरीका आहे जे भारत नाही वापरणार|

We are the democracy. Here the rule of law prevails. We very strongly believe in freedom of expression, freedom of speech,

आम्ही लोकतंत्र आहे जिकडे कायदाचा मान होतो| आम्ही नेहमी वैचारिक / वाचिक स्वातंत्र्य वर जोर दिला|

The liberty of our citizens is very very precious for each one of us. and to my mind our growth

and our evolving as a super power will be far more sustainable because it will be on the back of a many centuries

Of tradition, culture, value systems, which we cherish very much. -And China, certainly broke from its past.

It has broken from its past, but yet, it has not got freedom to its people. Yet, I don’t know how many investors there are

आत्तापर्यंत आपल्या लोकांना त्यानी स्वातंत्र्य दिले नाही| मला माहित नाही तिथे किती गुंतवणूकदार आहे|

really, end of the day happy with the work that they have done. It may be materialistically very good. -But, you know, setting the ideology and the civilization aside,

ते कामांनी प्रसन्न आहे| भौतिकरूपेत हे उत्तम आहे| पण विचारधारा आणि सभ्यतेला बाजूला ठेवून

They do have hard power. Their hard power of money, they are buying up countries, weak countries, buying up real estate indirectly.

Resources and now turning it into military power, asserting their muscle. And so, you know, ideal

China is saying that, okay, you may be right morally and all that, you know, we have the muscle power. -I think in international relations and this highly globalized world,

sovereign rights will always prevail over any such territorial expansionist efforts.

So, I think over a period of time more and more countries are understanding the sub-text, the underlined situation.

हळू हळू देश वर्तमान परिस्थितिला समजायचा प्रयास मध्ये आहे|

We have engagement with lot of the countries which are showing concerns about what has happened in the last few years. -Yes.

आम्ही खूब देशामध्ये गेलो ज्यांनी काही वर्षापासून होणारे कार्यात चिंता दाखविली|

Many governments which allowed this to happen have been changed or have changed in the last two, three years. You see that people are also conscious.

ज्या सरकारांनी हे घडवून लावले ते मागील २ - ३ वर्षामध्ये बदलली गेली|

That they do not want their territorial or sovereign rights to be tampered. -Sure! So, India has done very

well in multi-lateralism. In the globalization played a very responsible role actually.

But, do you feel that now there is the rise of nationalism and a kind of de-globalization with Trump and, you know, the France and Russia

Becoming more nationalistic, less internationalistic. And therefore, it’s like everyone to himself, in a sense.

हे सर्व राष्ट्रावर केंद्रित हून अंतर्देशीयत्वाहून लांब जातात आहे| एकप्रकारे सर्व स्वत:वर केंद्रित झाले|

In the short run, this is the kind of sense we are seeing where trade wars are erupting, protectionism has come to the fore.

सध्या आपण ह्याला व्यापारयुद्ध आणि संरक्षणवाद रूपेत बघत आहे|

But my own sense is this may not be very self, it may not be sustainable. My own sense is that more and more parts of the world will react adversely to it.

पण हे जास्तवेळ चालणार नाही आणि विश्व ह्याच्यावर प्रतीक्रिया करेल|

And we have seen a lot of U-turns also in the last couple of years. -Yes. -So, I think these

some of these comments need not be immediate cause of concern. We should let the story play out a little more.
