You don't care.
Δεν σε νοιάζει.
If you're a panda with twins, it's normal to abandon one to take care of the other.
Αν ήσουν Πάντα με δίδυμα, θα ήταν φυσιολογικό να εγκαταλείψεις το ένα για να προσέχεις το άλλο.
But if humans do any of these things, we would call it "wrong", "unfair" or "unjust".
Αλλά αν οι άνθρωποι κάνουν οτιδήποτε απο αυτά, θα λέγαμε πως θα ήταν ''κακό'', ''αθέμιτο'' ή ''άδικο''.
Yeah, why is that?
Γιατί έτσι;
Why do humans care so much about justice?
Γιατί οι άνρωποι νοιάζονται τόσο πολύ για το Δίκαιο;
The Bible has a fascinating response to that question.
Η Βίβλος έχει μια συναρπαστική απάντηση σε αυτή την ερώτηση!
On page 1, humans are set apart from all other creatures as "the image of God".
Στη πρώτη σελίδα, οι άνθρωποι διαχωρίζονται απο τα υπόλοιπα πλάσματα, όντας ''εικόνα Θεού''.
Yeah, God's representatives who rule the world by his definition of good and evil.
Ναι, οι αντιπρόσωποι του Θεού που εξουσιάζουν το κόσμο με το δικό Του ορισμό για το καλό και το κακό.
This identity is the bedrock of the Bible's view of justice.
Αυτή η ταυτότητα είναι το υπόβαθρο για την οπτική της Βίβλου για το δίκαιο.
All humans are equal before God and have the right to be treated with dignity and fairness, no matter who you are.

That would be nice, if we all did that. But, we know how the world really works.

The Bible addresses that too.
Η Βίβλος το αναφέρει και αυτό.
It shows how we are constantly redefining good and evil to our own advantage at the expense of others.
Δείχνει πως συνεχώς προσπαθούμε να επαναπροσδιορίσουμε το καλό και το κακό προς όφελος μας και εις βάρος των άλλων.
Yeah, self preservation.
Ναι, αυτο-διατήρηση.
The weaker someone is, the easier it is to take advantage of them.
Όσο πιο αδύναμος είναι κάποιος, τόσο πιο εύκολο είναι να τον εκμεταλλευτείς.
So, in the biblical story, we see this happening on a personal level,
Έτσι, στη Βιβλική ιστορία, το βλέπουμε αυτό να συμβαίνει σε προσωπικό επίπεδο,
but also in families and then in communities
αλλά επίσης και σε οικογένειες, και έπειτα σε κοινωνίες
and in whole civilizations that create injustice, especially towards the vulnerable.
και σε ολόκληρους πολιτισμούς που δημιουργούν αδικία, κυρίως πάνω στους ευάλωτους.
But the story doesn't end there.
Αλλά η ιστορία δεν τελειώνει εκεί.
Out of this whole mess, God chose a man named Abraham to start a new kind of family.
Σε όλο αυτό το χάος, ο Θεός διαλέγει έναν άνθρωπο που τον λένε Αβραάμ για να ξεκινήσει μια νέου είδους οικογένεια.
Specifically, Abraham was to teach his family to keep the way of the Lord by doing righteousness and justice.
Πιο συγκεκριμένα, ο Αβραάμ καλείται να διδάξει την οικογένειά του να φυλάττουν τους δρόμους του Κυρίου με το να πράττουν δικαιοσύνη και το δίκαιο.
Doing righteousness, that's a Bible word I don't really use.
Να πράττεις δικαιοσύνη, να μια λέξη απο τη Βίβλο που δεν πολυχρησιμοποιώ..
But, what comes to mind is being a good person.
Αλλά αυτό που έρχεται στο μυαλό είναι να είσαι καλός άνθρωπος.
What does that even mean, "being good"?
Τι όμως σημαίνει το ''να είσαι καλός'';
The biblical Hebrew word for righteousness is "tsedeka".
Η βιβλική Εβραϊκή λέξη για τη δικαιοσύνη είναι ''Τσεντεκά''
It's more specific.
Είναι πιο ειδική..
It's an ethical standard that refers to right relationships between people.
Είναι μια ηθική κατάσταση που αναφέρεται στις σωστές σχέσεις μεταξύ ανθρώπων.
It's about treating others as the image of God.
Έχει να κάνει με το να αντιμετωπίζεις τους άλλους ως εικόνα Θεού.
With the God-given dignity they deserve.
Με την δοσμένη απο το Θεό αξιοπρέπεια που αξίζουν.
This word "justice" is the Hebrew word "mishpat".
Η λέξη ''δίκαιο'' είναι η Εβραϊκή λέξη ''μισπάτ''.
It can refer to retributive justice.
Μπορεί να αναφέρεται στο τιμωρητικό δίκαιο
Like if I steal something, I pay the consequences.
Όπως το αν κλέψω κάτι, θα υποστώ τις συνέπειες.
Exactly.
Ακριβώς.
Yet, most often in the Bible, mishpat refers to restorative justice.
Αλλά, ακόμα πιο συχνά στη Βίβλο, η ''μισπάτ'' αναφέρεται στο αποκαταστατικό δίκαιο.
It means going a step further,
Σημαίνει το να πηγαίνεις ένα βήμα παραπέρα,
actually seeking out vulnerable people who are being taken advantage of and helping them.
το να ψάχνεις ευάλωτους ανθρώπους που τους εκμεταλλεύονται και να τους βοηθάς.
Yeah, some people call this "charity."
Ναι, μερικοί άνθρωποι αυτό το ονομάζουν 'Φιλανθρωπία'.
But mishpat involves way more.
Αλλά η ''μισπάτ'' εμπεριέχει πολλά περισσότερα!
It means taking steps to advocate for the vulnerable and changing social structures to prevent injustice.
Σημαίνει το να κάνεις βήματα προς συνηγόρια των ευάλωτων και να αλλάζεις τις κοινωνικές δομές για να αποτρέψεις την αδικία.
So, justice and righteousness are about a radical, selfless way of life.
Άρα, το δίκαιο και η δικαιοσύνη έχουν να κάνουν με ένα ριζοσπαστικό, ανιδιοτελή τρόπο ζωής.
Yeah. You find this idea all over the Bible.
Ναι, αυτό το βρίσκουμε σε όλη τη Βίβλο!
Like here, in the book of Proverbs.
Όπως εδώ, στο βιβλίο των Παροιμιών.
What does it mean to "bring about just righteousness"?
Τι σημαίνει το να ''φέρνεις δικαιοσύνη'';
Open your mouth for those who can't speak for themselves...
''Άνοιξε το στόμα σου υπέρ αυτών που δεν μπορούν να μιλήσουν για τους εαυτούς τους''
And, what do these words mean for the prophets, like Jeremiah?
Και τι σημαίνουν αυτά τα λόγια απο τους προφήτες, όπως ο Ιερεμίας;
Rescue the disadvantaged, and don't tolerate oppression or violence against the immigrant, the orphan and the widow.
''Ελευθερώστε αυτόν που βρίσκεται σε μειονεκτική θέση, και μην ανέχεστε καταπίεση και βία ενάντια στον ξένο, στον ορφανό και στη χήρα.''
And like here, in the book of Psalms:
Και εδώ επίσης, στο βιβλίο των Ψαλμών:
"The Lord God upholds justice for the oppressed, gives food to the hungry. and sets the prisoner free.
''Ο Κύριος Θεός δικαιώνει τους καταπιεσμένους, προσφέρει φαγητό στους πεινασμένους και ελευθερώνει τους αιχμαλώτους,
But he thwarts the way of the wicked."
Αλλά καταστρέφει τους δρόμους των κακών''
Whoa, he thwarts the wicked?
Ωπα, καταστρέφει τους κακούς;
Yeah, in Hebrew the word "wicked" is "rashah".
Ναι, στα Εβραϊκά, η λέξη ''κακός'' είναι ''ρασά''
It means "guilty" or "in the wrong".
Σημαίνει ''ένοχος'' ή '' αυτός που σφάλλει''
It refers to someone who mistreats another human, ignoring their dignity as an image of God.
Αναφέρεται σε κάποιον που κακομεταχειρίζεται κάποιον άλλον, αγνοώντας την αξιοπρέπεια τους ως εικόνα Θεού.
So justice and righteousness is a big deal to God?
Άρα το δίκαιο και η δικαιοσύνη έχουν πολύ μεγάλη σημασία για το Θεό;
Yes, it is what Abraham's family, the Israelites, were to be all about.
Ναι, είναι ακριβώς αυτό που έπρεπε να κάνει η οικογένεια του Αβραάμ, οι Ισραηλίτες.
They ended up as immigrant slaves being oppressed unjustly in Egypt.
Κατέληξαν ως σκλάβοι μετανάστες να καταπιέζονται αδίκως στην Αίγυπτο
So God confronted Egypt's evil, declaring them to be "rashah", guilty of injustice.
Και ο Θεός αντιμετώπισε το κακό της Αιγύπτου ανακηρύσσοντας τους ''ρασά'', ένοχους για αδικία!
So he rescued Israel.
Και έσωσε τον Ισραήλ.
But the tragic irony of the Old Testament story is that
Η τραγική ειρωνία όμως της ιστορίας της Παλαιάς Διαθήκης είναι
these redeemed people went on to commit the same acts of injustice against the vulnerable.
πως αυτοί οι λυτρωμένοι άνθρωποι με τη σειρά τους, διέπραξαν τις ίδιες πράξεις αδικίας απέναντι στους ευάλωτους.
So God sent prophets who declared Israel guilty.
Και έτσι ο Θεός έστειλε προφήτες που διακήρυτταν πως ο Ισραήλ είναι ένοχος.
But they weren't the only ones.
Αλλά δεν ήταν οι μόνοι.
There is injustice everywhere.
Αδικία υπάρχει παντού.
Yeah, some people actively perpetrate injustice.
Μερικοι άνθρωποι διαπράττουν ενεργά αδικία.
Others receive benefits or privileges from unjust social structures they take for granted.
Άλλοι λαμβάνουν πλεονεκτήματα ή προνόμια απο άδικα κοινωνικά κατασκευάσματα που παίρνουν ως δεδομένα.
Sadly, history has shown that when the oppressed gain power, they often become oppressors themselves.
Δυστυχώς, η ιστορία δείχνει πως όταν οι καταπιεσμένοι λάβουν εξουσία, τότε συχνά γίνονται αυτοί καταπιεστές...
So, we all participate in injustice, actively or passively, even unintentionally.
Έτσι, όλοι μας συμμετέχουμε στην αδικία, ενεργά ή παθητικά, ακόμα και ακούσια.
We're all the guilty ones.
Όλοι είμαστε ένοχοι...
So this is the surprising message of the biblical story.
Και αυτό είναι και το εκπληκτικό μήνυμα της Βιβλικής ιστορίας.
God's response to humanity's legacy of injustice is to give us a gift:
Η απάντηση του Θεού στην ανθρώπινη κληρονομιά της αδικίας, είναι να μας δώσει ένα δώρο:
the life of Jesus.
Τη ζωή του Ιησού.
He did righteousness and justice and yet he died on behalf of the guilty.
Έπραξε δικαιοσύνη και το δίκαιο, και όμως πέθανε στη θέση των αδίκων.
But then God declared Jesus to be the righteous one when he rose from the dead.
Αλλά τότε ο Θεός ανακήρυξε τον Ιησού ώς Τον δίκαιο, όταν τον ανέστησε απο τους νεκρούς.
So now, Jesus offers his life to the guilty
Και τώρα, ο Ιησούς προσφέρει τη ζωή Του στους ένοχους
so that they, too, can be declared righteous before God,
ώστε και αυτοί να ανακηρυχθούν δίκαιοι μπροστά στο Θεό
not because of anything they have done, but because of what Jesus did for them.
όχι εξαιτίας κάποιας πράξης τους, αλλά εξαιτίας του τι έκανε ο Ιησούς για αυτούς.
The earliest followers of Jesus experienced this righteousness from God not just as a new status,
Οι πρώτοι ακόλουθοι του Ιησού είχαν την εμπειρία της δικαιοσύνης του Θεού όχι μόνο ως μια νέα κατάσταση,
but as a power that changed their lives and compelled them to act in surprising new ways.
αλλά ως δύναμη που αλλάζει τις ζωές τους και τους ωθεί να ενεργήσουν με εκπληκτικους νέους τρόπους
Yeah, if God declared someone righteous when they didn't deserve it,
Ναι! Αν ο Θεός ανακηρύσσει κάποιον δίκαιο όταν δεν το αξίζει,
the only reasonable response is to go and seek righteousness and justice for others.
η μόνη λογική αντίδραση είναι να ψάξει τη δικαιοσύνη και το δίκαιο για τους άλλους.
This is a radical way of life.
Αυτός είναι ένας ριζικός τρόπος ζωής!
It's not always convenient, or easy.
Δεν είναι πάντα βολικός, ή εύκολος.
It is courageously making other people's problems my problems.
Σημαίνει το να στέκομαι θαρραλέα και να κάνω τα προβλήματα των άλλων δικά μου.
This is what Jesus meant by loving your neighbor as yourself.
Αυτό εννοούσε ο Ιησούς όταν είπε να αγαπάς τον πλησίον σου όπως τον εαυτό σου.
It is about a lifetime commitment fueled by the words of the ancient prophet Micah,
Είναι μια δέσμευση ζωής που αντλείται απο τα λόγια του αρχαίου προφήτη Μιχαία:
God has told you, humans, what is good and what the Lord requires of you.
Ο Θεός σας είπε, άνθρωποι, τι είναι καλό και τι ζητάει ο Κύριος απο σας:
It is to do justice,
Να πράττεις το δίκαιο,
to love mercy
να αγαπάς το έλεος,
and to walk humbly with your God.
και να περπατάς ταπεινά μαζί με το Θεό σου.
