For over 39 years, I was a police officer in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

I’ve done everything you can do as cop—from walking the beat, to investigating murder,

I’ve met a lot of cops—of every race, ethnicity and background.

Here’s what I can tell you:

Νὰ τί μπορῶ νὰ σᾶς πῶ:

Cops are not perfect.

Οἱ μπάτσοι δὲν εἶναι τέλειοι.

That’s not a news flash. But this might be: They don’t have to be perfect. They have to be excellent.

Αὐτὸ δὲν εἶναι εἴδηση. Ἀλλὰ αὐτὸ ἴσως εἶναι: Δὲν χρειάζεται νὰ εἶναι τέλειοι. Πρέπει νὰ εἶναι ἄριστοι.

And most officers reach excellence every single day, and often under very difficult circumstances

Καὶ οἱ περισσότεροι ἀστυνομικοὶ φτάνουν στὴν ἀριστεῖα κάθε μέρα, καὶ συχνὰ κάτω ἀπὸ πολὺ δύσκολες συνθήκες

—circumstances you can’t imagine, and wouldn’t want to if you could.

Perfection is an unattainable goal.

Cops are ordinary human beings.

Οἱ μπάτσοι εἶναι συνηθισμένοι ἄνθρωποι.

Like everyone else—lawyers, surgeons and baseball players—they make mistakes.

Ὅπως ὅλοι οἱ ἄλλοι — δικηγόροι, χειρουργοὶ καὶ παίκτες τοῦ μπέϊζμπολ — κάνουν λάθη.

But no profession works harder to correct its mistakes.

You can mark social progress by the improvements made by police departments over the last 50 years.

Μπορεῖτε νὰ βαθμολογήσετε τὴν κοινωνικὴ πρόοδο ἀπὸ τὶς βελτιώσεις ποὺ ἔγιναν ἀπὸ ἀστυνομικὰ τμήματα τὰ τελευταῖα 50 χρόνια.

Today, police are more professional, better educated, and better trained

Σήμερα, οἱ ἀστυνομικοὶ εἶναι περισσότερο ἐπαγγελματίες, περισσότερο μορφωμένοι, καὶ καλλίτερα ἐκπαιδευμένοι

than at any time in their history.

ἀπὸ ὁποιαδήποτε φορὰ στὴν ἱστορία τους.

You wouldn’t know it, though, if you listened to self-serving, self-righteous politicians

Δὲν θὰ τὸ γνωρίζατε ὅμως, ἐὰν ἀκούγατε ἰδιοτελεῖς, αὐτάρεσκους πολιτικοὺς

and activists.

καὶ ἀκτιβιστές.

In their version of history, the police are the villains of the story, not its heroes.

Στὴν δική τους ἐκδοχὴ τῆς ἱστορίας, οἱ ἀστυνομικοὶ εἶναι οἱ κακοὶ τοῦ παραμυθιοῦ, ὄχι οἱ ἥρωές του.

Like everything else this crowd does, they’ve got it all backwards.

The police aren’t the problem.

The politicians and activists are.

The police didn’t create the failed urban policies that have locked people

Οἱ ἀστυνομικοὶ δὲν δημιούργησαν τὶς ἀποτυχημένες ἀστικὲς πολιτικὲς ποὺ ἐγκλώβισαν ἀνθρώπους

into generational poverty.

στὴν κληρονομικὴ φτώχεια.

The police aren’t responsible for fatherless homes, failing schools, and bad lifestyle choices.

Οἱ ἀστυνομικοὶ δὲν εὐθύνονται γιὰ τὰ σπίτια χωρὶς πατέρες, γιὰ τὰ σχολεῖα ποὺ ἀποτυγχάνουν, καὶ γιὰ τὶς κακὲς ἐπιλογὲς τρόπου ζωῆς.

And they sure as hell aren’t responsible for the lack of respect shown to police officers.

Καὶ σίγουρα δὲν εὐθύνονται γιὰ τὴν ἔλλειψη σεβασμοῦ πρὸς τοὺς ἀστυνομικούς.

It is this lack of respect for authority, fostered over decades by the progressive left

Εἶναι αὐτὴ ἡ ἔλλειψη σεβασμοῦ γιὰ τὴν ἐξουσία, ποὺ καλλιεργεῖται ἐδῶ καὶ δεκαετίες ἀπὸ τὴν προοδευτικὴ ἀριστερὰ

and its fear-the-police narrative, that has led to the needless deaths

καὶ τὸ ἀφήγημά της «νὰ-φοβάστε-τοὺς-ἀστυνομικούς», ποὺ ἔχει ὁδηγήσει σὲ μάταιους θανάτους

of so many young black men.

When Officer Darren Wilson told Michael Brown to get out of the middle of the street in

Ferguson, Missouri, did Brown comply?

No.

Ὄχι.

When officers in Baltimore told Freddie Gray to stop resisting arrest, did he comply?

Ὅταν ἀξιωματικοὶ στὴν Βαλτιμόρη εἶπαν στὸν Φρέντυ Γκρέϋ νὰ σταματήσει ν' ἀντιστέκεται στὴ σύλληψή του, συμμορφώθηκε;

No.

Ὄχι.

When officers in New York City told Eric Garner to stop resisting arrest, did he comply?

Ὅταν ἀξιωματικοὶ στὴν Πόλη τῆς Νέας Ὑόρκης εἶπαν στὸν Ἔρικ Γκάρνερ νὰ σταματήσει ν' ἀντιστέκεται στὴ σύλληψή του, συμμορφώθηκε;

No.

Ὄχι.

Here’s a useful tip—if you want avoid a bad outcome with a police officer,

Νὰ μιὰ χρήσιμη συμβουλὴ — ἐὰν θέλετε νὰ ἀποφύγετε μία κακὴ ἔκβαση μ' ἕναν ἀστυνομικό,

follow this simple rule:

ἀκολουθήστε αὐτὸν τὸν ἁπλὸ κανόνα:

When a cop gives you a lawful command, obey it—even if you disagree.

Ὅταν ἕνας μπάτσος σᾶς δίνει μία ἔννομη διαταγή, ὑπακούστε — ἀκόμη κι ἂν διαφωνεῖτε.

Whatever problem you are experiencing is not going to be settled on the street.

Ὅ,τι πρόβλημα κι ἂν ἀντιμετωπίζετε, αὐτὸ δὲν πρόκειται νὰ λυθεῖ στὸ δρόμο.

People with complaints need to use the process established for that purpose.

Τὰ ἄτομα μὲ παράπονα πρέπει νὰ χρησιμοποιοῦν τὴ διαδικασία ποὺ ἔχει θεσπιστεῖ γιὰ τὸ σκοπὸ αὐτό.

Though cops don’t have the final say, they do in that moment.

Ἂν καὶ οἱ μπάτσοι δὲν ἔχουν τὸν τελευταῖο λόγο, ἐκείνη τὴ συγκεκριμένη στιγμὴ τὸν ἔχουν.

How you react can be a matter of life or death.

Τὸ πῶς θὰ ἀντιδράσετε μπορεῖ νὰ εἶναι ζήτημα ζωῆς καὶ θανάτου.

But the idea that a law-abiding citizen has to fear the police is a terrible and destructive lie.

Ἀλλὰ ἡ ἰδέα ὅτι ἕνας νομοταγὴς πολίτης πρέπει νὰ φοβᾶται τὴν ἀστυνομία εἶναι ἕνα φρικτὸ καὶ καταστροφικὸ ψέμα.

Let’s get some perspective.

Ἄς δοῦμε τὰ πράγματα στὶς σωστές τους διαστάσεις.

In 2014, 990 people were killed in police use-of-force incidents.

Τὸ 2014, 990 ἄνθρωποι σκοτώθηκαν σὲ περιστατικὰ ἀστυνομικῆς χρήσης βίας.

Does that sound like a lot?

Σᾶς ἀκούγονται πολλοί;

Did you know that, according to a Johns Hopkins study, that same year, medical errors killed

Γνωρίζατε ὅτι, σύμφωνα μὲ μία μελέτη τοῦ Τζὸν Χόπκινς, τὸν ἴδιο χρόνο, ἰατρικὰ λάθη σκότωσαν

250,000 people?

250.000 ἀνθρώπους;

Yet activists aren’t marching in the streets, demanding that the medical profession be reformed.

Ὡστόσο οἱ ἀκτιβιστὲς δὲν παρελαύνουν ἀπαιτώντας νὰ μεταρρυθμιστεῖ τὸ ἰατρικὸ ἐπάγγελμα.

Why not?

Γιατί ὄχι;

Why is it that the people who protect you from the bad guys—and I’ve seen these

Γιατί οἱ ἄνθρωποι ποὺ σᾶς προστατεύουν ἀπὸ τοὺς κακοὺς — καὶ ἔχω δεῖ αὐτοὺς

bad guys close up—are the subject of distrust and anger?

τοὺς κακοὺς ἀπὸ κοντά — εἶναι τὰ ὑποκείμενα δυσπιστίας καὶ θυμοῦ;

Why is it that groups like Black Lives Matter—I call them Black Lies Matter because it’s

Γιατί ὁμάδες ὅπως ἡ Black Lives Matter — ἐγὼ τὴν ἀποκαλῶ Black Lies Matter γιατὶ εἶναι

based on the falsehood that police represent a danger to black people—are celebrated

βασισμένη στὸ ψεῦδος ὅτι ἡ ἀστυνομία ἀντιπροσωπεύει κίνδυνο γιὰ τοὺς μαύρους ἀνθρώπους — ἐξυμνοῦνται

by the media and politicians?

All this is taking its toll on cops and, even more tragically, on the law-abiding citizens

Ὅλα αὐτὰ ἔχουν ἐπιπτώσεις στοὺς ἀστυνομικοὺς καί, ἀκόμη πιὸ τραγικά, στοὺς νομοταγεῖς πολίτες

in the neighborhoods that most need a strong police presence.

The murder rates in these neighborhoods are going up because lawful, aggressive policing

is going down.

Heather Mac Donald of the Manhattan Institute has explained why.

Here’s the truth: Police aren’t afraid of walking the streets

Νὰ ἡ ἀλήθεια: Οἱ ἀστυνομικοὶ δὲν φοβοῦνται νὰ περιπολοῦν στοὺς δρόμους

or being shot by random criminals.

ἢ ὅτι θὰ πυροβοληθοῦν ἀπὸ τυχαίους ἐγκληματίες.

They’re afraid of being involved in an incident that would label them forever as trigger-happy racists.

Φοβοῦνται νὰ συμμετάσχουν σὲ ἕνα περιστατικὸ ποὺ θὰ τοὺς κολλοῦσε γιὰ πάντα τὴν ἐτικέτα τοῦ «ἁψίθυμου καὶ εὐτυχισμένου» ρατσιστή.

Are there bad cops?

Ὑπάρχουν κακοὶ μπάτσοι;

I know first-hand that there are—I’ve had to fire them.

Ξέρω ἀπὸ πρώτο χέρι ὅτι ὑπάρχουν — ἔπρεπε νὰ τοὺς ἀπολύσω.

But the overwhelming majority are good, decent men and women, concerned about the law-abiding

Ὅμως στὴ συντριπτική τους πλειοψηφία εἶναι καλοί, ἀξιοπρεπεῖς ἄνδρες καὶ γυναῖκες, ποὺ νοιάζονται γιὰ τοὺς νομοταγεῖς

citizens in the communities they serve and are willing to put their lives on the line to protect them.

πολίτες στὶς κοινότητες ποὺ ὑπηρετοῦν καὶ εἶναι πρόθυμοι νὰ βάλουν τὴ ζωή τους σὲ κίνδυνο γιὰ νὰ τοὺς προστατέψουν.

Those who try to convince you, either out of ignorance or out of some ideological agenda,

Ἐκεῖνοι ποὺ προσπαθοῦν νὰ σᾶς πείσουν, εἴτε ἀπὸ ἄγνοια εἴτε ἀπὸ κάποια ἰδεολογικὴ σκοπιμότητα,

that the police are the enemy—those are the people you should fear.

ὅτι ἡ ἀστυνομία εἶναι ὁ ἐχθρὸς— αὐτοὶ εἶναι οἱ ἄνθρωποι ποὺ θὰ ἔπρεπε νὰ φοβᾶστε.

Run from them. Not the cops.

Ἀποφύγετε αὐτούς. Ὄχι τοὺς μπάτσους.
