Why do I get a 'Query Syntax Error', and do I need to escape special characters?

A Query Syntax Error usually means a search operator is malformed. Check for:

  • Unbalanced quotation marks or parentheses.
  • NEAR/ or NOTNEAR/ without a distance number, up to 500.
  • A quoted phrase followed by ~ without a number.
  • A query containing only excluded words, such as -word, with no positive term.

You do not need to escape slashes in ordinary subtitle text. Before searching, Filmot replaces punctuation such as /, \, ?, !, $, &, @, :, =, commas and square or curly brackets with spaces.

When Filmot can identify the problem, the error message describes it. If a correctly formed query still fails, send the exact search expression through the contact form or the Discord server linked there.

How can I contact Filmot support?

Use the contact form for support, feedback, privacy questions or reports of a website issue. Describe the problem clearly and include the relevant Filmot URL when possible. Provide a reply email address if you need an answer; avoid including passwords, identity documents or unnecessary personal information.

You can also discuss general questions with other users on the Filmot Discord server, linked from the contact page. Before reporting a common issue, check the FAQ.

Filmot does not store video or audio files and cannot provide copies of deleted videos.

What should I do if Filmot is slow, keeps loading or shows a 500 error?

A search that keeps loading, a timeout or an HTTP 500 error usually points to a temporary server problem. It is different from a completed search that simply has no matches, a query-syntax error or a Verify You're Human page.

Try these checks:

  1. Open the home page and run a short, simple search. If the site and several unrelated queries all fail, wait and retry later; rapidly refreshing the page is unlikely to help.
  2. If only one search fails, remove extra filters and simplify the expression. Keep the original search URL so the problem can be reproduced, but check it for personal or sensitive search terms first.
  3. If Filmot cannot be reached at all, try another up-to-date browser or a different network to help tell a local connection problem apart from a site outage. If the results load but playback in a YouTube iframe fails, check whether the error is displayed by the player and comes from YouTube.

For a persistent failure, use the contact form or the Discord link on that page. Include the page or search that failed, the approximate time and your time zone, your browser and the exact error message. Remove or replace any personal or sensitive terms in URLs and search expressions first, and add a screenshot only if it helps, with personal information cropped out. Do not include passwords or API keys.

Temporary interruptions do not by themselves mean that your account has been blocked or that a video has been removed from the index.

How do I search the Filmot FAQ or browse its questions by topic?

Open the FAQ page and use Search questions and answers to find a keyword or phrase. To browse a subject, select it in Filter by keyword; All keywords shows the full list. Browse topics and questions groups questions by topic.

Each answer has a permalink icon that opens its individual page, so you can bookmark it or share a direct link.

If no FAQs match, try shorter terms or another wording. For a question that is not covered, use the contact form or ask on the Discord server linked there.

How do I request removal of personal information for privacy or legal reasons?

Submit requests concerning personal information in Filmot's public search results through the contact form. This includes requests for erasure, de-indexing or the "right to be forgotten" under applicable data-protection laws, such as the GDPR or CCPA/CPRA where those laws apply. The rights and remedies available depend on the relevant law and circumstances.

You may request review of identifying information in video titles, descriptions, subtitles or channel details even if you do not own the YouTube channel. Provide the Filmot URL or search result, a brief explanation of the concern and, if available, the original YouTube URL. Do not include passwords or identity documents in your initial message; additional verification may be requested when appropriate.

Filmot indexes publicly accessible information about YouTube videos but does not host the underlying video or audio files. Removing a record from Filmot does not remove source material from YouTube or copies held by independent services.

Privacy complaints, copyright notices and Filmot account-deletion requests involve different legal issues and may require different verification. Each request is assessed under applicable law, taking account of relevant rights and circumstances; a particular outcome cannot be guaranteed. See the privacy policy for further information.
